Where to Plant: Give it a sunny spot in the middle of the border, where its warm colour can set the mood. Mass it for a focal point, or grow extra for fragrant bouquets.
Companion Plants: Heliopsis helianthoides rises behind with yellow daisies from June to September. Hemerocallis Happy Ever Appster™ 'Apricot Sparkles' adds apricot daylilies at 30 to 40 cm through the same months, echoing the coral phlox. Calamintha nepeta 'Blue Cloud' softens the front with blue flowers from June into fall. Warm coral and apricot against cool blue makes a lively summer border.
Plant Care: Plant in full sun for the best flowering and colour, in average to fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the soil evenly moist once shoots appear in spring. Water at the base and avoid wetting the leaves. Good air circulation helps prevent mildew in hot, humid spells. Deadhead to encourage rebloom. Cut the stems to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every few years in spring. Deer browse garden phlox, so protect it where they visit.
History: 'Sunset Coral' was bred at Walters Gardens in Zeeland, Michigan, as part of its Luminary® collection of tall garden phlox, sold under the Proven Winners® brand.
Final Thoughts: Fragrant, reblooming and mildew resistant. Plant it where the evening light hits. THE SUN SETS, THE PHLOX DOESN'T.
