Ilex glabra 'Compacta'

Ilex glabra 'Compacta': A Rounded Evergreen with Winter Berries

Compacta inkberry forms a rounded mound of glossy green leaves, providing evergreen continuity in a mixed planting. Small white flowers can be followed by tiny black berries that persist into winter when a suitable male pollinator is present. Its useful scale and full outline make it a practical shrub for a hedge or a garden framework.

Plant Characteristics:

• Height: 100-125 cm
• Spread: 80-100 cm
• Flower Colour: White
• Flowering Period: Spring
• Foliage: Dark Green
• Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun / Full Shade / Partial Sun
• Soil Requirements: Moist to Average Soil / Well-Drained Soil / Moist to Wet Soil

Uses and Benefits:

Use Compacta inkberry as a modest evergreen hedge or a rounded foundation shrub. Its glossy leaves create a steady green background, and pollinated female plants can carry small black berries into winter.

Care Instructions:

Maintain slightly acidic, moist soil and shape lightly if a hedge is desired. It tolerates wetter ground than many boxwoods. For a berry display, provide a compatible male inkberry nearby and retain enough flowering growth for pollination.
