Hemerocallis 'Mini Stella': A Carpet of Tiny Gold Stars

'Mini Stella' is pocket-sized and doesn't care who knows it. Little yellow flowers with an orange eye, fragrant and reblooming on a plant short enough for the smallest pot. FUN SIZE. FULL FLAVOUR.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Hemerocallis 'Mini Stella'
  • Common Name: Daylily
  • Height: 20–25 cm (8–10 in) in flower
  • Spread: 45 cm (18 in)
  • Flowers: Yellow with an orange eye and green throat, about 6 cm (2.5 in) across, fragrant
  • Bloom Time: Summer to early fall, with repeat bloom (July to September)
  • Foliage: Narrow, arching, grassy green leaves; dies back in winter
  • Features: Reblooming, fragrant

Where to Plant: Use it where space is tight: the front edge of a border, along a path, in a rock garden or in containers. A row makes a neat, low edging that blooms on and off all summer, and it puts up with clay soil.

Companion Plants: This tiny yellow daylily looks lovely beside Campanula rotundifolia, whose violet bells bloom from June to September. Geranium 'Boom Chocolatta' rises behind with purple flowers from June to August on 61 to 66 cm plants. Achillea 'Peter Cottontail' adds white flowers from June to September. All three are fine in full sun or part sun.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun for the most flowers. It will grow in part sun with lighter bloom. Average, well-drained soil suits it. Water through the first season, then mostly during dry spells. Containers dry out faster, so check pots often in summer. Pick off faded flowers and cut finished stems to the base to keep new buds coming. Remove old foliage in late fall or early spring. Divide every three or four years in spring or early fall if the clump gets crowded. Daylilies are toxic to cats.

History: 'Mini Stella' is a diploid miniature credited to hybridizer Jablonski and registered in 1983. Its name nods to the famous reblooming 'Stella de Oro', which made small, long-flowering daylilies popular across North America.

Final Thoughts: Put it on the balcony, the front edge or a window box. It fits anywhere and blooms everywhere. SMALL BUT MIGHTY, AS ADVERTISED.
