Where to Plant: The fine pink edge rewards a close look, so plant it near a path, a step or a window. It belongs in shady borders and woodland gardens, and under deciduous trees that let in spring light. Morning sun with afternoon shade suits it best.
Companion Plants: This sun-tolerant hellebore pairs well with Iris 'Caesar's Brother', whose violet flowers rise 80 to 100 cm in May and June. Polemonium 'Heavenly Habit' fills the front with violet flowers from May to July. Anemone 'Prince Henry' brings rose flowers from August to October, giving the bed a late show. Grow the group in full sun or part sun.
Plant Care: Plant in part shade, ideally where it gets morning sun and afternoon shade, in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It tolerates more sun if the soil stays moist, but it flowers less in deep shade. Neutral to slightly alkaline soil is best, and compost helps in heavy clay. Water well through the first season and during dry spells. Each spring, before buds open, trim off last year's tired leaves at the base. In zone 5, give it a loose mulch of shredded leaves or let snow cover do the job. Leave mature clumps undisturbed. Wear gloves when handling, since the sap can irritate skin.
History: The Ice N' Roses® series was bred in Germany by Heuger and is sold under the HGC® label, as crosses of Helleborus x hybridus with other hybrid hellebores grouped as Helleborus x glandorfensis. "Picotee" is an old flower-growers' word for a bloom whose petals are edged in a contrasting colour.
Final Thoughts: Give it morning sun, afternoon shade and a spot near the path. The deer won't ruin the outfit. SPOTLESS, SEASON AFTER SEASON.
