Geum Tempo™ 'Yellow': Sunny Semi-Doubles on Near-Black Stems
Yellow flowers with darker edges, facing up like they're trying to get your attention from across the room. This avens is the friend who waves way too hard at the airport. WE SEE YOU. WE'RE COMING.
Plant Characteristics:
- Botanical Name: Geum hybrid
- Common Name: Avens
- Series: Tempo™, from Terra Nova® Nurseries (cultivar code 'TNGEUTY')
- Height: 35–50 cm (14–20 in), counting the flower stems
- Spread: 60 cm (24 in)
- Flowers: Semi-double, yellow with darker edges, held on dark stems and facing up to outward
- Bloom Time: Spring to early summer (April to June)
- Foliage: Bright green, lobed leaves in a dense, low mound
- Features: Rabbit resistant, good for cut flowers
Where to Plant: Use it at the front of a border, along a path, or in containers where the early flowers are easy to see. It fits right into cottage gardens and mixed spring beds. In colder gardens, give it a sheltered spot.
Companion Plants: Yellow avens and Baptisia Decadence® 'Blueberry Sundae' make a classic yellow-and-blue pair, with the false indigo blooming in June and July. Deschampsia cespitosa adds fine, airy grass texture at 60 to 90 cm in flower, with seed heads lasting into fall. Tuck Platycodon 'Astra Blue' at the front for blue balloon flowers from June to August. This easy trio suits full sun or part sun.
Plant Care: Plant it in rich, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist. Morning sun with some afternoon shade is ideal in hot, exposed spots. Good winter drainage matters most, so avoid heavy clay that stays wet from fall to spring. Deadhead spent stems to keep flowers coming. If the foliage looks tired after the main bloom, trim it back and fresh leaves will follow. Divide every two to three years in early spring or early fall to keep the clump vigorous.
History: Avens belong to the rose family and have been grown for generations for their early, cheerful flowers. The Tempo™ series comes from Terra Nova® Nurseries in Oregon, and 'Yellow' was one of its newer introductions from around 2018 to 2019.
Final Thoughts: Cut a few for a jar on the windowsill and leave plenty for the butterflies. Deer and rabbits keep their distance. SUNSHINE ON A STICK.
