Geum TEMPO™ 'Coral': Coral Blooms That Stand Up Straight

This avens keeps time like a drummer who actually shows up to rehearsal. Coral-red flowers in big numbers, a tight mound that never flops, and a rebloom encore. ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR!

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Geum hybrid
  • Common Name: Avens
  • Series: TEMPO™, from Terra Nova® Nurseries
  • Height: 18–30 cm (7–12 in)
  • Spread: 25 cm (10 in)
  • Flowers: Bright coral-red, produced in large numbers; stems reach about 30 cm (12 in)
  • Bloom Time: Mid-spring to early summer (April to June), with rebloom in summer
  • Foliage: Green leaves in a tight mound about 18 cm (7 in) tall that stays clean all summer
  • Features: Compact, non-floppy habit, reblooms

Where to Plant: Use it for edging, at the front of a border, or in mixed beds and containers. Because it stays tight and upright, it doesn't need taller neighbours to hold it up.

Companion Plants: Coral flowers look fresh against Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue', which blooms blue from May to October at a similar height. Penstemon 'Dark Towers' rises behind with pink spires from June to August, reaching 85 to 90 cm. Helictotrichon 'Sapphire' brings a fine-textured grass to the group at 60 to 100 cm. All three enjoy full sun and well-drained soil.

Plant Care: Plant it in full sun, in moist, loamy, well-drained soil. Give it average water and don't let it dry out completely in its first season. Avoid spots where water sits over winter. Snip spent flower stems to keep it tidy and encourage summer rebloom. Cut back old leaves in early spring. Divide in spring every few years if the clump starts to thin in the middle.

History: The TEMPO™ series comes from Terra Nova® Nurseries in Oregon, bred to give avens a tighter, sturdier habit and a long bloom season. 'Coral' is a newer addition, listed among Terra Nova's 2024 introductions.

Final Thoughts: Front row, full sun, standing ovation. It comes back for a second set anyway. NO REQUESTS NEEDED.
