Euonymus fortunei 'Coloratus': Purple Winter Tones Across the Ground
Coloratus spreads on creeping stems with glossy green leaves that turn purplish as the season cools. The foliage creates a continuous carpet, and stems can climb when they meet a supporting structure. Its ability to root and extend makes careful placement important, with space to appreciate the colour while keeping growth within the intended bed.
Plant Characteristics:
- Height: 30-40 cm
- Spread: 125-150 cm
- Flower Colour: Green
- Flowering Period: Spring
- Foliage: Dark Green
- Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun / Full Shade / Partial Sun
- Soil Requirements: Average to Dry Soil / Well-Drained Soil / Moist to Average Soil
Uses and Benefits:
Coloratus creates a low carpet with purple fall foliage, but its spreading and climbing stems require a carefully managed position. Keep it within a defined planting area, away from woodland edges and trees that it could climb.
Care Instructions:
Check the boundary regularly and remove stems that root outside the intended bed. Do not allow growth to climb nearby trees. This wintercreeper can spread aggressively and is identified as invasive in Ontario; containment is an essential part of its maintenance.
