Echinacea SunMagic® Vintage Electric Orange: Highlighter Orange on a Low Mound

Intense orange petals around a raised, dark orange cone, glowing like the dashboard warning light you keep ignoring. Except this one you'll actually want to stare at. FULLY CHARGED AND NEVER NEEDS A MECHANIC.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Echinacea hybrid
  • Common Name: Coneflower
  • Series: SunMagic® Vintage, from Bull Plant Genetics
  • Height: 45–60 cm (18–24 in)
  • Spread: 45–60 cm (18–24 in)
  • Flowers: Intense orange petals around a raised, dark orange cone
  • Bloom Time: Midsummer into fall (July to September)
  • Foliage: Green, on a compact, well-branched mound
  • Features: Good cut flower, seed heads for winter interest

Where to Plant: Its compact, mounding shape suits the front of a sunny border, a small garden or a patio container. It's a cheerful addition to any pollinator planting, and the seed heads add winter interest if you leave them standing.

Companion Plants: Lilium 'Blacklist' brings deep burgundy lilies at 60 to 85 cm in June and July, a rich lead-in to bright orange. Clematis 'Stand by Me' adds blue bell flowers from June to August, a cool contrast that makes the orange glow. Gaura 'Whirling Butterflies' keeps airy white flowers coming from June to September. Plant the group in sun or part sun.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun to part sun, ideally six hours of sun or more, in average, well-drained soil. Coneflowers dislike sitting in wet soil over winter, so improve heavy clay or plant on a slight rise. Water regularly the first season, then only during long dry spells. Deadhead through summer to keep new buds coming. Leave the last flower heads for winter interest, then cut the stems back in early spring. Divide in spring if the clump becomes crowded.

History: The SunMagic® Vintage series comes from Bull Plant Genetics, which bred it for a compact, mounding habit, strong branching and plenty of flowers. Its coneflower ancestors are North American prairie wildflowers, and the genus name comes from the Greek echinos, meaning hedgehog.

Final Thoughts: Plant it with purples and blues and stand back. THE COLOUR WHEEL JUST BLEW A FUSE.
