Echinacea 'Mellow Limes': Lime Green Coneflowers on Tall Stems

Lime-green coneflowers, each one a slightly different shade, like a paint store sample wall that came to life. 'Mellow Limes' is cool, calm and completely refusing to be pink. CHILL VIBES, NO SALT ON THE RIM.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Echinacea purpurea 'Mellow Limes'
  • Common Name: Coneflower
  • Height: 80 cm (31 in)
  • Spread: 50 cm (20 in)
  • Flowers: Daisies in light green to lime shades around a darker cone. Being seed-grown, each plant varies a little in tone.
  • Bloom Time: Early summer to fall (June to October)
  • Foliage: Green, coarse leaves in an upright clump
  • Features: Good cut flower, blooms the first year

Where to Plant: Lime green mixes with almost everything, so plant it where it can tie together purples, whites and hot pinks in a sunny border. It's a natural for cutting gardens, where green flowers lift an ordinary bouquet.

Companion Plants: Salvia Sallyrosa™ April Night sends up violet spikes from May to September, a rich contrast to lime green cones. Asclepias 'Cinderella' adds pink flower clusters at 90 to 120 cm from July to September. Edge the bed with Iris 'Dream Stuff', a 25 cm dwarf iris with white flowers in May and June. All three suit full sun.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun in average to fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid places where water collects in winter, and lighten heavy clay with compost before planting. Water regularly through the first season, then during dry spells. Cut flowers freely and deadhead the rest to keep new buds coming. Leave the last flower heads standing over winter and cut back in early spring. Divide in spring every few years if the clump gets crowded.

History: Jelitto Perennial Seeds in Germany introduced 'Mellow Limes' in 2026, alongside 'Mellow Scarlets', as part of its Mellow line of seed-grown Echinacea purpurea that began with 'Mellow Yellows'. The species is native to the prairies and open woods of central and eastern North America.

Final Thoughts: Tuck it next to hot colours and let it calm everybody down. THE GARDEN JUST HIRED A MEDIATOR.
