Coreopsis UpTick™ Gold: Big Golden Daisies on a Tight Mound

Golden daisies stacked on a dense emerald mound that stays full right to the ground, like it never skipped leg day. This tickseed is compact, cheerful and very proud of its figure. NO BALD SPOTS HERE.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Coreopsis 'Baluptold'
  • Common Name: Tickseed
  • Series: UpTick™, from Darwin Perennials
  • Height: 30–36 cm (12–14 in)
  • Spread: 30–36 cm (12–14 in)
  • Flowers: Large, golden-yellow daisies with gold centres
  • Bloom Time: Late spring to early fall (June to September)
  • Foliage: Narrow, emerald-green leaves in a dense mound that stays full to the base
  • Features: Long blooming, compact, good for cutting

Where to Plant: Use it at the front of a sunny border, in a rock garden, along a walk, or in containers and window boxes. Mass a few together to light up a sunny bed from June onward.

Companion Plants: Liatris cylindracea sends up purple spikes from July to September, a bold contrast to the gold daisies. Geum TEMPO™ 'Rose' blooms pink from April to June, before the tickseed gets going. Eryngium 'Big Blue' adds spiky blue flowers from June to August. All three are tough, sun-loving plants for dry spots.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil. Good drainage matters most, especially in winter. Avoid wet, heavy spots. Water regularly in the first season and during dry spells after that. Deadhead or lightly shear spent flowers to encourage more bloom. Leave the stems over winter and clean the plant up in early spring as new growth starts. In the colder parts of zone 5, choose a sheltered, well-drained spot. Divide every few years in spring if the centre starts to thin.

History: UpTick™ Gold is part of the UpTick™ series from Darwin Perennials, bred for a compact, mounded habit, larger flowers and a longer flowering season. The series won Best New Nursery Stock Plant Introduction at the UK's Four Oaks Trade Show in 2016.

Final Thoughts: Deer resistant, a bee magnet and long blooming. Plant it in full sun and let it flex. GOLD MEDAL, NO PODIUM NEEDED.
