Solidago 'Little Lemon': Buttery Goldenrod in Window Box Size

'Little Lemon' is the zesty little garnish of the goldenrod world. Soft lemon-yellow clusters on a compact mound that fits in a pot on the patio. A SQUEEZE OF SUNSHINE, NO SEEDS.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Solidago hybrid 'Dansolitlem'
  • Common Name: Dwarf Goldenrod
  • Series: A Proven Selections® plant from Proven Winners®
  • Height: 30–45 cm (12–18 in)
  • Spread: 45–60 cm (18–24 in)
  • Flowers: Soft lemon to creamy yellow, in shaggy, branched clusters
  • Bloom Time: Midsummer to early fall (July to September)
  • Foliage: Deep green leaves in a compact, upright mound
  • Features: Compact enough for containers
  • Plant Patent: USPP 17,297

Where to Plant: Use it to edge a sunny bed, in mass plantings, in rock gardens, or as a filler in mixed containers. It's a handy way to bring late colour into a small garden.

Companion Plants: Andropogon 'Red October' stands behind at 150 to 180 cm, with its best show in September and October. Tanacetum 'Robinson's Giant Mix' adds pink painted daisies at 45 to 75 cm in June and July, before this goldenrod opens. Salvia 'Bumbleberry' brings pink spikes at 25 to 30 cm in June and July along the front. Plant them all in full sun.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil. Water regularly through its first season, then during dry spells. Rich soil and fertilizer aren't needed. Proven Winners suggests trimming off the spent flowers after the first flush to encourage a second round in fall. Cut the plant back in late fall, or leave it standing and tidy it in early spring. Divide in spring every few years if the clump gets crowded.

History: 'Little Lemon' was bred by Gabriel Danziger of Danziger Flower Farms at Moshav Mishmar Hashiva in Israel, from an open-pollinated seedling in a goldenrod breeding program. It is sold under the trade name Little Lemon, with 'Dansolitlem' as its registered cultivar name.

Final Thoughts: Deer leave it alone and bees can't get enough. Put one by the door. WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS, PLANT THEM.
