Pulmonaria 'Raspberry Splash': Raspberry-Pink Bells on Upright Leaves
Deep raspberry-pink bells that face up instead of hanging their heads, over narrow leaves splashed with silver. 'Raspberry Splash' looks like somebody flicked a paintbrush at the shade bed. MODERN ART, NO ADMISSION.

Where to Plant: Plant it at the front of a shade border, along a woodland walk or in a group under shrubs where you want early colour. Its upright, narrow leaves give a more structured look than most lungworts.
Companion Plants: Helleborus HGC® Ice N' Roses® White flowers white from March to May, overlapping with the lungwort. Heuchera 'Paris' adds rose flowers at 25 cm from May to August. Astilboides tabularis brings huge leaves and cream flowers at 90 to 125 cm in June and July. Together they give the shade garden colour and bold texture all season.
Plant Care: Plant in moist, humus-rich soil in part to full shade. Add compost to heavy clay or sandy soil. Keep it watered through dry summer spells, since drought stress is what usually brings on mildew. Right after blooming, cut it back hard to refresh the foliage. A new set of spotted leaves fills in quickly and stays tidy until fall. Divide clumps every few years in early fall.
History: 'Raspberry Splash' was bred by Dan Heims at Terra Nova Nurseries in Canby, Oregon, from a cross between Pulmonaria longifolia 'Bertram Anderson' and Pulmonaria 'Leopard', with the patent filed in 1999. Its long, upright leaves come from the longifolia side of the family.
