Primula Crescendo® White: Freshly Laundered White Under Bare Trees

Clean white flowers with a yellow eye, showing up so early the snow is still packing its bags. This primrose is the early bird that also brought coffee for everybody. MORNING PERSON ENERGY.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Primula elatior hybrid
  • Common Name: Oxlip Primrose
  • Series: Crescendo®, bred by Benary
  • Height: 25 cm (10 in)
  • Spread: 20–30 cm (8–12 in)
  • Flowers: White with a yellow eye, held in clusters on short, sturdy stems
  • Bloom Time: Early to mid-spring (April to May)
  • Foliage: Crinkled, medium green leaves in a low rosette
  • Features: Very early colour

Where to Plant: Tuck it along the front of a shady border, beside a path or under deciduous trees and shrubs, where it gets bright spring light before the canopy fills in. A row of them brightens a dark corner, and it makes a tidy spring container plant.

Companion Plants: Aquilegia canadensis flowers red in May and June, just after the primrose. Polemonium 'Touch of Class' adds blue flowers at 30 to 40 cm in May and June. Liriope 'Big Blue' gives a grassy clump with lavender spikes in August and September. White primroses light up the front in April and May.

Plant Care: Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. If you garden on heavy clay, work in compost first so the crown doesn't sit wet. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially through hot summer stretches, and add a light mulch to keep the roots cool. Snip off spent flower stems once blooming ends. Primroses of this type can fade out after a few years if they get crowded, so lift and divide clumps right after flowering every few years to keep them vigorous.

History: The oxlip, Primula elatior, grows wild in woods and damp meadows across much of Europe and into western Asia, and its genus name comes from the Latin primus, meaning first. The Crescendo® series comes from the German seed house Benary, which bred it for uniform flowering and strong winter hardiness.

Final Thoughts: Deer resistant, low maintenance and bright enough to light up a shady corner. Pair it with any colour. IT GETS ALONG WITH EVERYBODY.
