Phlox Super Ka-Pow™ White: Fragrant Moon-Garden White

Fragrant white clusters with the faintest pink-lavender eye, glowing in the evening like a freshly ironed tablecloth. This phlox is the cleanest thing at the barbecue. NOT A SINGLE KETCHUP STAIN.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Phlox paniculata 'Balsukawi'
  • Common Name: Garden Phlox
  • Series: Super Ka-Pow™, from Darwin Perennials
  • Height: 45–50 cm (18–20 in)
  • Spread: 45 cm (18 in)
  • Flowers: White with a faint pink-lavender eye, fragrant, in large rounded clusters
  • Bloom Time: Early to late summer (June to August)
  • Foliage: Narrow, dark green leaves
  • Features: Fragrant, good cut flower, bred for good powdery mildew resistance
  • Plant Patent: USPP 33,187

Where to Plant: Tuck it into the front or middle of a sunny bed, plant it in a moon garden near the patio or use it in a large container. White flowers make every colour around them look cleaner, and the stems cut well to bring the fragrance indoors.

Companion Plants: Aubrieta 'Rock On Blue' carpets the front with blue flowers from April to June. Paeonia 'Julia Rose' adds orange peony blooms in May and June. Chelone 'Hot Lips' brings pink flowers in August and September as the phlox finishes. The white phlox links spring and fall with flowers from June to August.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun to part sun in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Give each plant room for air to circulate, and water deeply at the base in dry weather. Phlox that dries out is more likely to get mildew. Remove spent clusters to keep it flowering. Cut the stems to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every three or four years in spring to keep it vigorous. Deer will browse garden phlox, so protect it where they visit.

History: Garden phlox is native to the moist meadows and open woods of the eastern United States, and its name is Greek for flame. 'Balsukawi' was selected in the Netherlands in 2016 from a controlled breeding program and is sold in the Super Ka-Pow™ series by Darwin Perennials.

Final Thoughts: Mix it into any colour scheme and everything suddenly looks intentional. Bees and hummingbirds approve. THE PEACEMAKER OF THE BORDER.
