Where to Plant: Its short, tidy habit makes it a natural for the front of the border, small city gardens and large containers. Plant it near a bench or patio so you catch the scent.

Companion Plants: Iris 'Butter and Sugar' flowers in May and June with bicolour blooms, ahead of the phlox. Anemone 'Prince Henry' adds rose anemones at 60 to 90 cm from August to October. Geum 'Koi' brings orange flowers at the front from May to September. Lavender phlox in the middle keeps the colours calm from June to August.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun to part sun in fertile, well-drained soil. It copes with clay or sandy soils as long as it gets steady moisture. Regular deep watering in dry spells is one of the best ways to prevent powdery mildew. Deadhead faded clusters to keep it blooming. Cut the stems to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every few years in spring if the clump gets crowded. Deer do browse garden phlox, so protect it if they're common in your yard.

History: The Super Ka-Pow™ series comes from Darwin Perennials, part of Ball Horticultural Company, and this variety was bred in Guadalupe, California, from a program that began in 2014. The series was developed as an upgrade to the original Ka-Pow™ phlox, with larger blooms, better branching and improved hardiness.

Final Thoughts: Mildew resistant, container friendly and a hummingbird favourite. Put a pot by the door and check in. LATE CHECKOUT APPROVED.
