Where to Plant: Use it as a specimen, the centrepiece of a shade bed, or the back of a woodland border, where its gold leaves light up the scene. It also works in a large container, and it tolerates black walnut, but protect it where deer and rabbits roam.
Companion Plants: Astilbe 'Superba' flowers magenta at 90 to 120 cm in August and September, a late show behind the hosta. Heucherella 'Pink Fizz' edges the front at 15 to 20 cm with pink flowers in June and July. Eurybia divaricata 'Eastern Star' carries white flowers from August into October at 30 to 45 cm. All three share its need for shade to partial sun.
Plant Care: Plant in part sun to full shade, in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A few hours of morning sun deepens the gold; avoid harsh afternoon sun. Water deeply during dry spells and mulch to keep the soil cool. Give it room to reach full size over a few seasons. Remove flower scapes after bloom and cut back dead foliage after frost. Divide in spring if you want more plants.
History: Olga Petryszyn of Indiana, the hybridizer behind 'Brother Stefan', bred 'Coast to Coast' from a cross of 'Manhattan' and 'Golden Gate' and registered it in 2014. It was introduced in the Shadowland® collection from Proven Winners®.
Final Thoughts: Give it shade and space, then watch every road trip in the neighbourhood slow down out front. ROLL DOWN THE WINDOW.
