Heuchera 'Berry Timeless': Silver Leaves, Pink Bells, Months of Encores

'Berry Timeless' refuses to age and, frankly, we'd like to know the secret. Silvered leaves, two-toned pink flowers and blooms that keep coming back until frost. NO FILLER. NO BOTOX. JUST BERRIES.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Heuchera hybrid
  • Common Name: Coral Bells
  • Height: 20–25 cm (8–10 in) in leaf; flower stems 45–50 cm (18–20 in)
  • Spread: 50 cm (20 in)
  • Flowers: Light pink bells in persistent dark rose calyxes, aging to a deeper rose for a two-toned look
  • Bloom Time: Early summer to fall frost (June to October), with continuous rebloom
  • Foliage: Dark green with a broad silver overlay
  • Features: Long repeat bloom
  • Plant Patent: USPP 26,357

Where to Plant: Edge a shady path with it, tuck it under shrubs, or plant it in groups at the front of a woodland border. The upright flower stems also suit containers and make small cut flowers for a bud vase.

Companion Plants: Geranium 'Spessart' is a natural partner, with white flowers in May and June and the same tolerance for sun or shade. Carex 'Blue Zinger' adds a fine blue-green texture beside the coral bells' rounded leaves. Phlox divaricata 'May Breeze' brings white flowers in May and June at 30 to 40 cm, before the heuchera's pink flowers run from June to October. These are all happy in part shade.

Plant Care: It grows most vigorously in part shade, ideally with shade in the afternoon. Plant in moist, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter, and keep the crown at soil level. Water regularly through the first season, and during dry spells after that. Remove flower stems once they finish, and trim away tired leaves in spring. Every three or four years, when the crown starts to lift out of the soil, divide it in spring and replant the pieces a little deeper.

History: Hans Hansen bred 'Berry Timeless' at Walters Gardens in Zeeland, Michigan, and it was patented in 2016 as part of the Timeless collection of reblooming coral bells. One of its parents is 'Cherry Cola', which explains the cherry-tinted flowers.

Final Thoughts: Plant it at the front of a shady bed and enjoy the show all season. The hummingbirds will be regulars. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER.
