Where to Plant: This is a front-of-border plant that earns its spot all summer, so line a sunny walkway with it, mass it along a driveway, or use it to edge a bed or fill a large container. Clay soil and cold winters don't bother it, but rabbits and deer will snack on it.
Companion Plants: Plant Aconitum carmichaelii 'Arendsii' at the back of this yellow daylily for blue flowers from August to October on 120 to 150 cm stems. Astrantia 'Star of Billion' adds white flowers from June to August at 55 to 65 cm. Iris 'Butter and Sugar' brings bicolour flowers in May and June, before the daylily starts. This group grows in full sun or part sun.
Plant Care: Full sun gives you the most flowers and the strongest rebloom. It still performs in part sun, with fewer blooms. Plant the crown about 2.5 cm (1 in) below the surface in average, well-drained soil. Water through the first season, then mostly leave it be. Regular water during a hot summer keeps the repeat flushes coming. Pick off faded flowers if you like a neat look, and remove finished stalks. Clear old foliage in late fall or early spring. Divide in spring or late summer every three to four years to keep the clump vigorous.
History: 'Big Time Happy' belongs to the Happy Ever Appster™ line of reblooming daylilies developed by American breeder Dr. Darrel Apps, built around compact plants that keep flowering through the season. Daylilies come from eastern Asia, and the genus name Hemerocallis means beauty for a day.
Final Thoughts: Plant it where you need a mood boost, like right by the mailbox where the bills arrive. GOOD VIBES ONLY. MANDATORY.
