Where to Plant: At this size it is ideal for edging a sunny walk, filling the front of a border, massing on a slope or planting in containers. It is tough enough for hot spots along driveways and sidewalks and handles clay as well as sandy soil, but protect it where deer visit.
Companion Plants: Apricot daylilies and Amsonia 'Storm Cloud' make a soft pairing, with blue starry flowers in May and June opening the season. Rudbeckia 'American Gold Rush' brings golden yellow from July to October at 56 to 66 cm. Edge the front with Geranium 'Biokovo', whose white flowers from May to July sit nicely beside the warm apricot. Grow these in full sun or part sun.
Plant Care: Plant in full sun for the most flowers, or part sun, in average, well-drained soil. Water regularly the first season; after that it handles dry spells well. Remove spent flowers to keep it tidy, and cut each flower stem to the base once all its buds have finished. Clear away old leaves in late fall. Divide every few years in spring or late summer if the clump becomes crowded and flowering drops off.
History: 'Apricot Sparkles' was bred by Dr. Darrel Apps from a cross of 'Sunny Honey' and 'Opportunity', evaluated in Bridgeton, New Jersey, and granted US plant patent PP13223 in 2002. Apps bred the Happy Ever Appster™ daylilies for long, repeat bloom on compact plants.
Final Thoughts: Plant it where the sun can catch the shimmer. The flowers are even edible, if you're feeling fancy. GLITTER YOU CAN GARNISH WITH.
