Echinacea PowWow® White: Slim, Crisp and Calm in a Crowd

This white coneflower takes the hottest, driest spot in the yard and treats it like a spa day. Pure white petals, golden-orange cones and branching stems that keep pumping out flowers. ROCK-BOTTOM EFFORT, TOP-SHELF RESULTS.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Echinacea purpurea
  • Common Name: Coneflower
  • Series: PowWow®, from PanAmerican Seed
  • Height: 40–60 cm (16–24 in)
  • Spread: 30–40 cm (12–16 in)
  • Flowers: Pure white petals around a golden-orange cone, held on sturdy, branching stems
  • Bloom Time: Early summer to early fall (June to September)
  • Foliage: Dark green, coarse leaves in a compact, upright clump
  • Features: Blooms the first year

Where to Plant: Its narrow, upright habit tucks easily into a crowded border, a small front yard or a large container, and the white flowers glow at dusk. It handles hot, dry spots along driveways and sidewalks well, as long as the soil drains.

Companion Plants: Papaver 'Beauty of Livermere' opens bold red poppies in May and June, before the white coneflowers start. Eryngium 'Blue Glitter' adds spiky blue heads at 90 cm from June to August, a cool, sharp texture beside rounded daisies. Along the front, Armeria maritima forms tidy tufts with pink flowers in May and June. Give them full sun and good drainage.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil. Coneflowers dislike wet feet, especially in winter, so loosen heavy clay or plant slightly high. Water regularly through the first season, then only during long dry spells. Deadhead to keep the flowers coming. Leave the last heads standing for winter interest and to feed finches, then cut back in early spring. Divide in spring every few years if the clump becomes crowded.

History: The PowWow® series was developed by PanAmerican Seed as a seed-grown Echinacea purpurea that flowers in its first year with more blooms per plant than earlier seed coneflowers. Its sister, PowWow® Wild Berry, is an All-America Selections winner.

Final Thoughts: Forget to water it? It forgot to notice. THE LOW-MAINTENANCE RELATIONSHIP YOU DESERVE.
