Echinacea 'Mellow Yellows': A Full Spectrum of Mellow Yellow
Cream, lemon, butter, gold. 'Mellow Yellows' covers every shade of sunshine in one batch and keeps going straight into fall. It's the friend who's always in a good mood, and somehow you DON'T FIND IT ANNOYING.
Plant Characteristics:
- Botanical Name: Echinacea purpurea hybrid 'Mellow Yellows'
- Common Name: Coneflower
- Height: 80 cm (31 in)
- Spread: 45 cm (18 in)
- Flowers: Daisies in a range of yellows, from cream and lemon to dark gold, around an orange-brown cone
- Bloom Time: Early summer to fall (June to October)
- Foliage: Green, coarse leaves in an upright clump
- Features: Good cut flower, blooms the first year
Where to Plant: The soft mix of yellows looks natural in a meadow-style planting or a pollinator garden, and it cools down a border full of hot colours. It is a reliable cut flower, and the seed heads left standing feed goldfinches into fall.
Companion Plants: Hibiscus Summerific® 'Valentine's Crush' stands at 150 cm with large red flowers in July and August, a warm partner for soft yellow. Aconitum 'Album' adds white spires at 90 to 120 cm in July and August. For spring, Iris 'Black Joker' brings deep purple flowers in May and June. Sun or part sun suits the whole group.
Plant Care: Plant in full sun or part sun with at least six hours of light, in average to fertile, well-drained soil. It won't tolerate soggy winter soil, so improve heavy clay or plant on a slight rise. Water regularly through the first season, then only during long dry spells. Deadhead or cut flowers through summer to keep new buds coming. Leave the last heads standing for the birds and cut back in early spring. Divide in spring every few years if the clump gets crowded.
History: Jelitto Perennial Seeds in Germany introduced 'Mellow Yellows' in 2018 as a seed-grown Echinacea purpurea hybrid with a full spectrum of yellow shades. Its success led Jelitto to add 'Mellow Limes' and 'Mellow Scarlets' to the line in 2026.
Final Thoughts: Drought, deer, a rough week? It shrugs. PLANT IT AND BORROW SOME OF THAT ATTITUDE.
