Bergenia 'Winterglut': Winter Glow on Big Glossy Leaves

'Winterglut' basically means winter glow, and this plant takes the job seriously. Thick, glossy leaves turn burgundy-red when the cold rolls in, like the garden poured itself a mug of mulled wine. CHEERS, JANUARY.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Bergenia cordifolia 'Winterglut'
  • Common Name: Pigsqueak, Heartleaf Bergenia
  • Height: 30–40 cm (12–16 in) in flower
  • Spread: 30–45 cm (12–18 in)
  • Flowers: Deep pink to red, bell-shaped, in clusters on sturdy stems
  • Bloom Time: Early to mid spring (April to May)
  • Foliage: Thick, glossy, dark green evergreen leaves with reddish undersides, turning burgundy-red in fall and winter
  • Features: Evergreen

Where to Plant: Use it as an edging plant, a low groundcover or a bold accent in a shady bed, and the compact clump also suits a rock garden. It handles clay, tolerates some dryness once settled and doesn't mind urban conditions, so it's a good pick for a city front yard.

Companion Plants: Iris 'Butter and Sugar' opens yellow and white flowers in May and June above slim, upright leaves. Iberis 'Snowsation' makes a low white carpet in May and June next to the red bergenia. Behind, Persicaria 'Superba' carries pink spikes from May to July. Sun to part sun keeps all three happy.

Plant Care: Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. The best leaf colour comes with some sun, as long as the soil doesn't dry out. Water well through the first season. Keep the foliage over winter for the colour. Tidy up in early spring by removing damaged leaves before new growth starts, and cut off flower stems once they fade. Divide in spring or early fall when the clump gets crowded. Slugs can chew the leaves in damp shade.

History: Bergenia cordifolia grows wild in damp, rocky woods and meadows of Siberia and Mongolia, which explains its love of cold. 'Winterglut' is German for winter glow, a nod to the leaf colour.

Final Thoughts: Deep pink bells in spring, evergreen leaves all year, deer not invited. THE ONLY THING GLOWING IN FEBRUARY.
