Baptisia Decadence® 'Vanilla Cream': Soft Ivory Spikes Without the Sprawl

Soft yellow buds open to creamy vanilla spikes, and then it hangs onto its seed pods like souvenirs. 'Vanilla Cream' is proof that plain is a flavour, not an insult. BASIC? NEVER HEARD OF HER.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Baptisia hybrid
  • Common Name: False Indigo
  • Series: Decadence®, a Proven Winners® perennial
  • Height: 76–91 cm (2.5–3 ft)
  • Spread: 91–107 cm (3–3.5 ft)
  • Flowers: Creamy vanilla white spikes that open from soft yellow buds, followed by seed pods that hold into fall
  • Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer (June)
  • Foliage: Grey-green, with a bronze tint as it emerges in spring, on a compact, clump-forming plant
  • Features: No deadheading needed
  • Plant Patent: USPP 25,663 / Can 5,564

Where to Plant: It was bred to be smaller than old-fashioned false indigo, so it fits a city yard or the middle of a mixed border without taking over. Its soft colour calms down hotter neighbours. The seed pods carry interest past bloom and are useful in dried arrangements.

Companion Plants: Filipendula 'Venusta' towers behind at 180 to 240 cm with pink plumes from June to August. Polemonium 'Heavenly Habit' stays low in front with violet flowers from May to July. Hemerocallis 'Always Afternoon' adds purple daylily blooms from June to August. Cream, pink and purple make a soft, easy palette for sun to part sun.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun for the sturdiest stems and best flowering. It handles part sun too. Choose average to lean, well-drained soil; rich soil and extra fertilizer aren't needed. Water regularly through the first season while roots establish. Baptisia sends down a deep root and takes two or three years to reach full size. It resents being moved, so pick its home with care and let it be. It doesn't need dividing. Leave spent flowers to form pods. Cut the stems down in late fall, or leave them for winter interest and cut them back in early spring before new shoots appear.

History: The Decadence® series came from breeder Hans Hansen at Walters Gardens in Michigan, who crossed North American Baptisia species to get compact plants in new colours. 'Vanilla Cream' is one of the long-standing members of the group, and Walters Gardens now also offers 'Vanilla Cream II', an updated version with earlier bloom and longer spikes.

Final Thoughts: Butterflies love it, deer skip it and you never have to deadhead. Pair it with something loud and let it be the classy one. VANILLA NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE.
