Anemone 'Curtain Call Deep Rose': Deep Rose Drama in a Pint Size

Semi-double dark rose-pink flowers with golden centres, taking the stage just as summer thinks it's over. 'Curtain Call Deep Rose' is compact, dramatic and knows exactly where the spotlight is. BRAVO, BRAVO, ENCORE!

Plant Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Anemone hybrid
  • Common Name: Japanese Anemone, Windflower
  • Height: 36–46 cm (14–18 in)
  • Spread: 41–46 cm (16–18 in)
  • Flowers: Semi-double, dark rose-pink with a golden-yellow centre
  • Bloom Time: Late summer to early fall (August to September)
  • Foliage: Green, deeply lobed leaves in a low, tidy mound
  • Features: Rabbit resistant, good for cutting
  • Plant Patent: USPP 30,520

Where to Plant: Put it at the front of a border, along a path, or in a container where you can see it up close. Its small size makes it easy to tuck into a mixed bed that needs late colour. Plant a few together for a solid patch of pink in September.

Companion Plants: Calamintha nepeta 'Blue Cloud' keeps the front edge soft with blue flowers from early summer to fall. Astrantia 'Star of Billion' adds white flowers at 55 to 65 cm through the summer. Symphyotrichum shortii brings blue asters from August to October, perfect beside the deep rose flowers. All three are happy in full sun or partial sun.

Plant Care: Give it moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. In full sun, keep the soil evenly moist. Afternoon shade helps in hot spots. It dislikes both drought and soggy winter soil, so heavy clay should be loosened with compost. Like other Japanese anemones, it can be slow in its first year and then spreads slowly by underground rhizomes. A layer of mulch keeps the roots cool in summer and helps protect it in its first winter. Leave the foliage in fall and cut it back in early spring. Divide in spring if you want more plants.

History: The Curtain Call series was bred by Hans Hansen at Walters Gardens in Zeeland, Michigan. 'Curtain Call Deep Rose' came from a 2014 cross between 'Pamina' and 'Pretty Lady Emily', aimed at a shorter, more compact Japanese anemone.

Final Thoughts: Plant it at the front of the border so everyone gets a good seat. Deer and rabbits aren't invited. THE SHOW ISN'T OVER UNTIL THIS ONE BOWS.
