Where to Plant: Put it at the back of a sunny border, along a fence, or against a wall where the yellow can glow. It brings height to a narrow bed without taking much ground.

Companion Plants: Geranium macrorrhizum 'Ingwersen's Variety' covers the ground with pink flowers from May to July, before the hollyhock blooms. Salvia 'Blue Hill' brings blue spikes from June into early fall, the perfect match for yellow. Liatris cylindracea adds purple wands from July to September at mid height. Each one grows well in full sun.

Plant Care: Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil. Water through the first season, and during long dry spells after that, watering at the base. Hollyhock rust can show up as orange spots on the undersides of leaves. Give plants space, pull off spotted leaves, and clean up the foliage in fall. A stake helps in windy spots. After blooming, cut the plant back to about 20 cm (8 in) to tidy it up. It grows a deep taproot, so it doesn't divide or transplant well.

History: The garden hollyhock comes from wild plants native from Turkey into Asia. Jelitto Perennial Seeds in Germany began breeding the Spotlight Series in 1992 for single hollyhocks in stable colours that live on as perennials, and launched it in 2010 with 'Sunshine' as its yellow member.
